FreeNAS 11.2 – Perfect OS for Home Server

The new FreeNAS 11.2 is now available for download. FreeNAS 11.2 is an advanced operating system built for NAS and home server. This OS has become the best NAS system together with NAS4Free. There are many important updates and new modern web user interface on this release.

FreeNAS 11.2 Web Interface

The new web UI has a long story. Back to the FreeNAS 10 (Codename Corral) which introduce a modern webUI, the 11.2 version also features a modern UI. The failure on FreeNAS Corral was fixed on this release. The Modern UI is the default mode in FreeNAS 11. But you are free to switch to the legacy web interface if you like.

Personally, I prefer the new Web UI because it feels modern and very easy to use. The navigation between menus is so smooth and responsive.

As you might know, the new FreeNAS system requires minimum 8 GB of RAM and 10 GB of hard disk space for it to run properly. You can install it on a dedicated PC or you can try it on a Virtual Machine such as VirtualBox.

FreeNAS 11.2 brings a lot of improvements and features. The new disk management makes it even easier to add and configure multiple hard disks to the system.

Docker and Traditional Virtualization Supports

I am not sure that the previous version of FreeNAS already came with feature such as Docker host virtualization. This feature lets us create a Docker host in FreeNAS. Then, we can create multiple docker applications on top of it. It is a great feature for you who utilize Docker on your organization.

Creating a Primary Domain Controller for the network is also very easy. You can also build a powerful file server without domain controller. FreeNAS features can be expanded by installing some plugins available. For example, you can install Nextcloud, Plex Media Server using the available plugins.
