How to install VMware Player 12.5.6 on Ubuntu 16.04

This tutorial will show you how to install VMware Player on Ubuntu 16.04. As you know, the new VMware Player 12.5.6 has been released a while ago. VMware Player is a free tool that support various virtual disk such as OVA, VMX, OVF formats. Based on my own experience, this new VMware Player 12.5.6 can be installed on my Ubuntu 16.04 smoothly.

Steps to install VMware Player 12.5.6 on Ubuntu 16.04

Step 1. Download VMware Player

Visit this post to download the latest VMware Player 12.5.6 for Linux system. You will have a file with .bundle extension as follow:

VMware-Player-12.5.6-5528349.x86_64.bundle

Step 2. Install VMware Player

Open Terminal and cd to the download directory. For example I download it to my home/Downloads directory.

cd ~/Downloads
sudo sh VMware-Player-12.5.6-5528349.x86_64.bundle

The command will bring up the graphical installer. Follow on screen installation wizard as follow.

First, accept the license agreement

Click Next, specify if you like to check for product update on startup

Enter the license key. You can skip it and move forward

Now, open VMware Player from the application menu on Ubuntu 16.04. On the first window, enter your email address to obtain free license. If you have commercial license, enter it here.

Finally, VMware Player 12 is now ready for you
