How to Install QGIS 3.2 on Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver

Welcome to another Ubuntu Tutorial. Today, we are going to install QGIS 3.2 on Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver. QGIS is a free, open source GIS software for Linux. It comes with many features, stable and nice GUI. We will install QGIS 3.2 via repository which is easier and you will get the future release without having to update manually. Before we jump to the installation, you may want to take a look at the features on QGIS 3.2. QGIS, together with ArcGIS as well as Mapinfo Professional have become a leader in the GIS software.

QGIS 3.2 Screenshots (Ubuntu 18.04)

I installed the new QGIS 3.2 Bonn on my Ubuntu 18.04. Before you try to install it, I hope these screenshots can give a better visualization of the new QGIS 3.2.

 

Install QGIS 3.2 on Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver

Now let’s jump to the installation process. First, we need to add the QGIS repository to Ubuntu 18.04. Open the sources.list file using nano or your favorite editor. 

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Now add the following lines to the end of the file

#QGIS
deb https://qgis.org/debian bionic main
deb-src https://qgis.org/debian bionic main

Install the Key

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-key CAEB3DC3BDF7FB45

Update and Install QGIS

sudo apt update
sudo apt-get install qgis python-qgis qgis-plugin-grass

Wait until the installation is completed.

Now open QGIS from the Ubuntu dash menu and enjoy QGIS 3.2. 

Remove QGIS 3.2 from Ubuntu 18.04

If for some reasons you want to remove QGIS from your Ubuntu, please use the following command

sudo apt remove qgis

or

sudo apt purge qgis

Final Thoughts

Install QGIS 3.2 on Ubuntu 18.04 is pretty easy. But personally, I would expect a better way to install QGIS on Ubuntu. I wish there will be a single DEB package which can be installed without having to worry about dependency files. Not all Ubuntu users like the command line. This is the year 2018 and everything should be as easy as installing software in Windows.
