The new version of OpenMediaVault 5.5.10 is now available for download. OpenMediaVault (OMV) is a Debian based operating system that specially designed for server. You can install it on your PC or virtual machine and build your own home server with it. It comes with many features such as Samba file server, NFS server, Rsync, FTP and some more. All come at no cost. Yes, OpenMediaVault is available for free download with GPLv3 license.
Installing OMV is pretty much straight-forward. Even an inexperienced user can do the installation without problems. The new version comes with the following details:
- Linux Kernel 5.4.0
- Update locales
- Fix bugs in date/time page
- Added the environment variables ‘OMV_AVAHIDAEMON_ALLOW_INTERFACES’,
- Better performance and many more.
OpenMediaVault Installation
Step 1. Obtain the installation ISO
In order to install the OMV on a local server or virtual machine, you will need to download the latest version of the installation ISO from the link below.

Choose the latest version available on that page above. Save it to local directory.
Step 2. Create the USB installation drive
If you are planning to install it on a dedicated PC or server, you will need to create a USB installation disk. If you are running Windows, you can use Rufus software. Once you have the USB installation disk, you can boot your server with the USB disk.
Step 3. The Installation Process
On the first screen, choose Install and press Enter. This will take you to the installation process directly.
On the next screen, choose the installation language.
Next, choose your location from the list
Configure the keyboard you are using
Wait a moment while the installer loading the installation components. Next we need to configure the network. First type the hostname for the OMV server.
And then type your domain name.
Create a new password for root user
Configure the time zone
Now the installation will begin. Wait until the installation is completed.
During the installation process, you will be asked to specify the Debian mirror repository. Choose the one closest to your location.
Finally, select the boot loader.
In a few moments, the OpenMediaVault installation should be completed. Reboot your server.
After reboot, please take a note of your OMV server configuration. You should see something like this on your server console.
Login to the console using root user and use the root password we created during installation. Check the server ip address with ip addr command as shown below
Now from other computer, open the web browser and type the OMV IP address to access the web dashboard. The default user is “admin” and password “openmediavault”. You can change it later from the web dashboard.
