How to Install macOS Mojave on VMware Player 15 on AMD Processor

It was interesting to be able to run macOS Mojave on a Windows 10 machine. In my previous post, I have shown you how to install macOS Catalina 10.15.3 on the Lenovo Thinkpad T450 series. So far it works very well. And today, I spent some time installing macOS Mojave on VMware on my Windows 10. For your information, I am running AMD FX-8350 on my PC. There are some additional steps we need to take if we want to run macOS Mojave on VMware on an AMD processor.

Steps to Install macOS Mojave on VMware 15 on AMD computer

Step 1. Download required files

In order to be able to install macOS Mojave on VMware on AMD processor on Windows 10, you will need the following software

  • VMware Player 15.0.4–I know it’s a bit outdated but it works very well and it is free for personal use
  • macOS Mojave ISO
  • Unlocker — to unlock and enable VMware to create macOS virtual machine on Windows.
  • Darwin.iso – to install VMware Tools (in case the standard VMware Tools does not work)

Step 2. Install VMware Player

Using the link I provide above, install the VMware Player 15.0.4. If you have VMware Workstation, you can skip this step. This method also works on VMware Workstation. But please note that I had issues when using the latest VMware Workstation 15.5. That’s why I rolled back my installation to this 15.0.4 version.

Step 3. Install Unlocker

Extract the Unlocker compressed file. And then right-click the file win-install.cmd and choose Run as Administrator. Make sure you close VMware Player before executing this command.

Basically, this unlocker will patch your VMware Player or Workstation and then enable the ability to create The macOS virtual machine on it. Without Unlocker, you won’t be able to create a macOS virtual machine on Windows or Linux machines.

Step 4. Create a New Virtual Machine

Open VMware and click Create a New Virtual Machine. Choose I will install the operating system later

Click Next. Select Apple Mac OS X from the Guest Operating System list and choose version macOS 10.14.

Please note that if you don’t run the unlocker, you will not see the Apple Mac OS X on the Guest Operating System list above. Give a name and location for the new virtual machine

Now create a new disk for the VM. I would recommend to put 100 GB. Or at least 50 GB.

On the next page, click Customize Hardware to change some default settings.

On the hardware settings, make sure you assign more than 8 GB of memory and minimum 2 processors. This way to ensure the macOS Mojave work well.

Click New CD/DVD (SATA) and then provide the location for the macOS Mojave ISO file you downloaded on the previous step.

Click Close and then Finish.

Step 5. Edit the Virtual Machine vmx file

We are getting closer. Next step is to modify the .vmx file so AMD processor can work. Open your virtual machine directory and look for .vmx file. In my case, it would be Mojave.vmx because Mojave is the name of my virtual machine.

Right-click the .vmx file and choose open with. Next, choose Notepad. And then add the following lines to the .vmx file

smc.version = "0"
cpuid.0.eax = "0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:1011"
cpuid.0.ebx = "0111:0101:0110:1110:0110:0101:0100:0111"
cpuid.0.ecx = "0110:1100:0110:0101:0111:0100:0110:1110"
cpuid.0.edx = "0100:1001:0110:0101:0110:1110:0110:1001"
cpuid.1.eax = "0000:0000:0000:0001:0000:0110:0111:0001"
cpuid.1.ebx = "0000:0010:0000:0001:0000:1000:0000:0000"
cpuid.1.ecx = "1000:0010:1001:1000:0010:0010:0000:0011"
cpuid.1.edx = "0000:1111:1010:1011:1111:1011:1111:1111"
featureCompat.enable = "FALSE"

So your .vmx file will looks like this

Now save and close the file.

Step 6. Start the macOS Mojave Virtual Machine

At this point, we are ready to start our VM. And Viola…..macOS Mojave boot screen.

Step 7. macOS Mojave Installation

I will not show the complete installation step here because it will make this post super long. I will show you the important steps only.

After choosing the installation language, we need to format our disk for macOS installation. When you reach the following page, click Disk Utility.

And then, click your VMware hard drive and click Erase. Make sure

Make sure you choose APFS and GUID Partition map. Click Erase and close the disk utility. From the macOS Utility window, click Install macOS.

Now you are ready to install macOS Mojave. Follow the instruction shown on your screen until completed.

Once the installation completed, you can continue installing VMware Tools on macOS.
