How to create PPTP VPN on Linux Mint 18.1

This tutorial is going to show you how to create PPTP VPN on Linux Mint 18.1. At the end, you will be able to connect to remote PPTP VPN Server from Linux Mint. Before proceeding, make sure you have a working PPTP VPN Server running. You may read how to create PPTP VPN Server on Windows Server 2012. By default, Linux Mint 18.1 or Linux Mint 18.2 already equipped with PPTP VPN client. So we only need to create it.

Steps to create PPTP VPN on Linux Mint 18.1

Open Network from System Settings

Click + button and then select VPN | Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)

Now we need to configure the VPN details. At this point, you will require the following information on hands:

  • PPTP VPN Server IP address (Gateway)
  • PPTP VPN Server username and password

Next, click Advanced and uncheck all authentication methods except MSCHAP and MSCHAPv2.

Click OK and then Add. Now the connection is ready for use.
