The new version of Antergos 17.8 is now available for download. Antergos is an Arch based Linux distribution that comes with Gnome desktop on the Live version. But we can freely choose any other supported desktop environment during installation. Antergos 17.8 comes with many updated software such as Gnome Shell 3.24.3, Linux Kernel 4.12.3, updated Cnchi installer and many more. Antergos is available as Live DVD ISO, can be used to boot up a PC or Laptop without having to install it.
On this Antergos Review, we use the following hardware:
- Lenovo ThinkPad T450 Laptop series
- RAM: 16 GB
- HD: 500 GB
- VGA: nVidia series
The ISO was burned into a USB Flash Drive (8GB) using Rufus and then boot the Laptop in Live mode.
The Desktop
Antergos 17.8 Live ISO brings the latest GNOME desktop environment with minimalist look. I run this distribution from a Live USB and it performs very well. If you want to try this distro, Live USB is the best way to do it. On the first boot, Cnchi will look for update and it will update itself automatically when internet is available.
Hardware Detection
On our test bed, every hardware are working well. The WiFi is automatically detected and I use an external monitor attached to my laptop. Antergos automatically detect the LG monitor and set the correct resolution to it.
Even my LG Monitor is recognized as Undefined 20″ but it works pretty well. My built in web camera on the ThinkPad T450 also works with Antergos. The Cheese application can utilize my camera perfectly.
Installed Applications
Antergos 17.8 comes with minimalist applications installed. You won’t find any Office Suite such as OpenOffice or LibreOffice. It is understandable since Antergos Live is a bit different to most Linux distro. During installation, you will be asked to choose deskop environment to be installed and also some additional applications.
Software Center
If you want to add or remove applications, Antergos provide Pamac as the default GUI software manager. If you have been using Manjaro, you will get familiar to Pamac. Its pretty simple and easy to use.
Usability
Antergos 17.8 is a popular Arch based Linux for Desktop and it comes with options of Desktop Environment to match your style. Even if you are a new user, Antergos wont cause any problems. In few minutes you will get used to it.
